Jarrett Walker on the Past, Present and Future of Transportation
His book is Human Transit and he means it.
Jarrett Walker, perhaps the most recognizable transit planner in the United States, has said himself that he’s not, “[…e]ven that interested in transportation.” Instead, he writes, right on his blog—humantransit.org—that he’s, “[…i]nterested in people being able to do things, as a result of being able to go places.”1 I believe him; his work speaks for itself. He’s worked with dozens of agencies across the world to help communities have conversations about what mobility and access goals they’re trying to achieve, rather than what tools they’d like to use. And then helping those with capabilities (i.e. elected officials) to make the hard decisions that make change possible.
