A Streetcar Named “Overton Window”
One of the great mysteries in transportation planning is the United States’ great inability to build fast, efficient, rapid public transit. Despite fanfare around the New York City Subway system—722+ miles of track, hundreds of stations across the US’ busiest* city—the MTA’s finances are in disarray, the stations and trains are filthy and there are still gaps in coverage that prevent a simple trip for many New Yorkers in the outer boroughs.
Boston, Chicago, Washington DC, San Francisco, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Portland, OR, Seattle, Philadelphia—all have some form of transit system to encourage and make possible a cheap (at least cheaper than owning a car) method to travel from one place to another.
