In Good Faith with Ryan Avent

Economic Historian and Journalist Ryan Avent asks us to trust each other with every fiber of his being. He may be onto something.

Buy In Good Faith

Three exasperated takeaways for those short on time.

  1. Faith is the hidden infrastructure of society. Ryan argues that institutions like science, markets, and democracy depend on people trusting that others will follow shared norms. I tie this to everyday life, such as trusting that the electricity works and the bus arrives.

  2. Infrastructure fails when we skip defining the problem. I argue that policy fixes are often applied to cultural problems, and that the US sought to spend a trillion dollars on infrastructure with little beyond highway expansion to show for it. Ryan’s Raleigh example makes a similar point: cost-benefit numbers alone stall transit projects, while a shared vision of the future can move them forward.

  3. Leadership and community matter more than incentives alone. We both doubt that tax or policy incentives will change the mindset of the wealthiest people alone. We point instead to leaders willing to put others first, local civic efforts like trash pickups and mutual aid, and a bottom-up shift in what people value.
